Baptism
Baptism is a sacrament, a visible sign of God's love. When we are baptized, we give thanks to God and publicly acknowledge our need to turn away from evil. Through our baptism, we joyfully embark on a journey of faith with God.
Parents or godparents who seek baptism for a child will be required to swear on behalf of that child to follow Jesus Christ. The congregation present will in turn promise to support and pray for the child and their parents and godparents.
Important symbols used in baptism are:
A godparent's role is one of prayer and moral support, bringing the child up in the Christian faith. Each candidate for baptism should have three godparents, two of the same sex as the child, and one of the opposite sex. Godparents may be family members or friends, and should be baptized Christians.
Families may choose to take part in a Thanksgiving service before the baptism of their child.
